What does the Bible say about tattoos?

It seems over the past decade or so, tattoos have burst into popular culture. Does the bible have anything to say about this development?

Tattooing has been around for years, but in recent times it has become more accepted and very popular. However surveys show that nearly a quarter of those who rushed to the tattoo parlours when they were young later regret the decision.

The purpose and significance of tattooing has varied through time and also from culture to culture. Tattooing in modern European societies today does not usually have religious or cultural significance and is more often regarded as decoration.

We are often asked if a Christian should get a tattoo and there are some biblical principles what would assist in making that decision.
