Jesus Christ asked His disciples a year before He was arrested and executed, 'Who do men say that I am?'. The conversation that followed was an important learning curve for His followers. Over time the disciples came to understand Jesus existed before His human birth, but they still did not fully comprehend who He was or where He came from for some time.

Interestingly, the apostle John writing some six decades after Jesus’ death, does not begin with Jesus’ human genealogy or His human birth, but with His divine origin. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God” (John 1:1-2). John refers to Jesus Christ as 'the Word'. He says He was in the beginning with God, and that He was God.
The Apostle John also records Jesus’ final prayer before His death: “And now, O Father, glorify Me together with yourself, with the glory which I had with you before the world was” (John 17:5).
