Horoscopes, palm readers and psychics

Astrology is a form of idolatry because it puts man's devices before God's ways, teaching people to be guided by observing the movements of the stars and planets, instead of God’s word.

Jeremiah 10:2-3 tells us very clearly: "Thus saith the Lord, learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain…" (See also Isaiah 47:13-14.)

Just before the nation of Israel entered the Promised Land God, through Moses, reminded the people about the importance of obeying the laws He had given them, instead of relying on fortune tellers and astrology: "And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them…." (Deuteronomy 4:19).

God knew the Israelites would be susceptible to believing the sun, moon and stars determined their daily lives and destinies, because so many around them already worshiped them as gods and believed they guided their lives. Many, even in our modern world, love to have their palms read just to see what the palm reader will say about their lives.

The author recalls as a teenager she was given an astrology roll, which was unrolled a bit each day to reveal her daily horoscope. She told herself she was just doing it just for fun, but as each day progressed she realized she was comparing what happened during the day to what she had read on the roll. When she started avoiding doing some things it warned about, she finally realized it was definitely influencing her life.

Some Christians claim to be separate from idols, while they still practice this type of "worship," by consulting their daily or monthly horoscope and occasionally or regularly visiting a psychic. These scriptures clearly show God does not want us to get involved with these practices.
