From harlot to heroine

The prostitute, Rahab, is an ancestor of Jesus Christ and her name is listed in Hebrews 11 as an example of faith and belief in God.

After the Israelites left Egypt and Moses had died, Joshua led Israel on the final part of their journey to the Promised Land. As the multitude was approaching Jericho, a heavily fortified pagan city, he sent spies to ascertain the strength of the fortifications. It was a very dangerous assignment.

The whole city had already heard the news about the miraculous events and conquests of the wandering nation of Israel, yet Rahab was the only person in Jericho who believed it. She had decided to fear and obey Israel’s God and demonstrated her faith and resolve to the point of even risking her own life to hide the spies from the soldiers of Jericho. “By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace” (Hebrews 11:31).

She set an example of trust and faith in God which encourages and strengthens us today.
